The Mustard Source is a series of documentaries on the impact of COVID-19 and the way young people in Australia can respond to it.
EPISODE 1 – WORRY
What’s made you worried during the pandemic? What do you do when you worry?
This episode explains worry as a normal physiological emotion and explores what makes teenagers worry and what they do when they are worried.
We discuss a Christian perspective on prayer as one option to pursue when you are worried.
EPISODE 2 – SUFFERING
What suffering have you seen during the pandemic? What causes suffering?
This episode explores different types of suffering or pain and discusses explanations for it. We present God’s response to suffering both now and in the future for consideration.
Teenagers are encouraged to think about their understanding of suffering so they are equipped to deal with it when they experience pain in their life.
EPISODE 3 – COMMUNITY
What acts of kindness have you done during the pandemic? What have you learned about community through this experience?
This episode explores why people are motivated to help others and presents being made in the image of God as an explanation for our intrinsic ‘goodness’.
It encourages us to think about how we can all give to and receive from the community around us.

The videos are excellent. They are designed to serve people of faith, and none. In the anxiety episode there’s lots of really good information about the biology of worry. It could also be introduced as a way of thinking about prayer.
Mustard is an outstanding organisation deeply committed to seeing young people grow in their faith and leadership. Through their ‘Mustard Source’ series, they have adapted to the rapidly changing climate and speak into the many challenges young people are facing today.
I am planning on using these videos in Chapel services, they are a good way to introduce a topic and help students start digging a little deeper. I like the quick comments by other students, and the professional way the segments have been put together. I hope and pray that God will use these resources for His glory.
I really like the videos. They are well produced and 10 minutes is a good length. I like the validation given to Anxiety as a normal response, something that is part of our autonomic nervous system. I think this is a really important starting place that shouldn’t be underplayed. We don’t want young people to feel shamed or ashamed for feeling anxious, and knowledge of how it works will help them right-size it in their lives.
